A subtensor runtime update sent transaction fees soaring across the network -- staking and registration costs jumped as much as tenfold, and one user watched a failed SN80 unstake loop burn through 3 TAO overnight. At the same time, root weight-setting was quietly replaced by a basket-swap mechanism that isn't turned on yet, leaving the network running flat weights with no fix date. Elsewhere, SN66 miners cracked six long-standing math problems and TAO clawed back above $250.

01 / QUICK HIT
Basic operations -- stake, unstake, transfer stake, swap stake -- now cost several times more than before the runtime update, with fees cited from 0.0016 to 0.05 TAO depending on the action. The root dividend claim fee climbed inconsistently through the day, from about 0.056 TAO to 0.164 TAO and then 0.18 TAO for the same subnet count, and subnet miner registration fees rose roughly tenfold, from about 0.002 to 0.028 TAO, separate from the usual dutch-auction cost curve. One user reported an unstake-all action that displayed a 0.05 TAO fee but charged only about 0.015 TAO on success -- while a failed attempt burned the full 0.05 TAO. dougsillars flagged the issue on X; a subtensor PR to halve transaction fees is in the pipeline, and a contributor said runtime release 466 already fixed part of it.
A community member lost roughly 3 TAO overnight when a bot repeatedly retried a failed SN80 unstake that kept returning NotEnoughStakeToWithdraw, burning about 0.0465 TAO per attempt.
No official reimbursement process exists for fees lost to the bug.

Root weights: off, and the replacement isn't on yet
btcli root set-weights now fails with a 'call not found' error -- the SubtensorModule.set_root_weights extrinsic has been removed. It's being replaced by a basket-swap mechanism for managing subnet weight baskets, but the flag that activates swap-based rebalancing hasn't been set to true. That leaves the network running on flat basket weights, with neither manual weight-setting nor the new swap system functional, and no ETA for activation.

Product and research updates
opentensor featured SN105 (Beam) on Novelty Search, showing live video applications running without developers standing up their own streaming infrastructure; the team also previewed Beam Studio, a tool for automating data transfers. markjeffrey reported that SN66 miners closed six open mathematical problems -- cumulatively unsolved for 249 years, including one open since 1959 (Erdős Problem 96) -- in ten days. const_reborn shared that Numinous shipped its first forecasting model, Numinous-1, an 8B-parameter model fine-tuned from Qwen3-8B on the best reasoning trajectories produced by its miners.
