What is dTAO (Dynamic TAO)?

dTAO, or Dynamic TAO, gives every Bittensor subnet its own alpha token and liquidity pool, so TAO emissions flow to subnets based on market demand.

The problem dTAO solved

Before dTAO, how much TAO each subnet received was decided by a small group of root-network validators. That made allocation depend on a few votes rather than on broad market signals.

How dTAO works

With dTAO, every subnet has its own token, called alpha, and a liquidity pool paired with TAO. Staking TAO into a subnet swaps it for that subnet’s alpha through the pool, and unstaking swaps it back. The price of alpha in TAO therefore reflects demand for that subnet.

TAO emissions are directed to subnets in proportion to this market signal, so subnets that attract more stake receive a larger share. Subnets that do not attract demand receive less.

What it means for participants

Stakers choose which subnets to back and take on price exposure to that subnet’s alpha. Subnet owners are incentivized to build something the market values. Miners and validators earn their share of the subnet’s emissions, paid in alpha.

Daily alpha price moves per subnet appear in each Bittensor Daily edition and on the subnet pages. This is explanatory content, not investment advice.

FAQ

What does dTAO stand for?
Dynamic TAO. It is the mechanism that lets the market, rather than a fixed committee, determine each subnet’s share of TAO emissions.
What is alpha?
Alpha is the token of an individual subnet. It trades against TAO in that subnet’s liquidity pool, and its price reflects demand for the subnet.
Is staking in a subnet risk free?
No. The value of alpha relative to TAO can move up or down, and subnets can lose demand. Do your own research.
